“Thanks for the Mammaries, Bettina Hubby” is a feature length documentary about the power of Art to transform and sustain our struggle to survive.
In October of 2013 the multi-disciplinary Los Angeles artist Bettina Hubby went into the California desert to install “Googly Eyes for Giant Rock” at High Desert Test Sites. A documentary crew went with her to film a short documentary about her work.
In January of 2014, Bettina was diagnosed with breast cancer. She kept it quiet from her wider community of artists until the night before her double mastectomy, when she made her announcement.
She created a Facebook event for her double mastectomy the next morning, and called it “Thanks for the Mammaries.” She asked her friends to show their support by posting boob-themed art on the page.
When she awoke the next morning she found that her page was filled with boobs of all sorts and sizes, funny, sexy, inkblot boobiess, giant, tiny, silly boobies, boobies, boobies and more boobies. The parade of boobs continued on her Facebook page for the next month, throughout her reconstruction and recovery process.
A few months after her surgery, she announced a group art show, “Thanks for the Mammaries” and asked her community of artists to submit boob-themed artwork.
Filming resumed several weeks before the show as Bettina began planning “Thanks for the Mammaries.” In addition to coordinating the contributions of over 130 artists, she was making her own piece for the show, a 40 foot long silk tapestry of her Facebook wall while managing her treatment and recovery.
“Thanks for the Mammaries” was written about in LA Weekly and New York Magazine, and was named “Best Show of 2014” by Ed Ruscha in Artforum magazine.
Over the past year, Bettina has worked to maintain her health while her career continues to soar appearing at Paris Photo L.A. and on a panel at MOCA discussing her photography work in the book “Both Sides of Sunset” by Artbook Press.
We are currently raising funds in order to begin the post-production that will assemble the past 2 years of Bettina’s life into a compelling, emotional journey of survival, defiance and the resilience of the human spirit through Art.
